Paige Spiranac Gets a Tip from Steve Dresser Golf Academy

Paige asked Steve Dresser of the Steve Dresser Golf Academy at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. to help her avoid getting too steep in her swing. Here’s a simple exercise that Steve showed her.

Paige Spiranac: Hey, everyone. It’s Paige, and we are at Steve Dresser Golf Academy where he is going to give me a couple tips.

So, I told him earlier that I come a bit steep on the ball and this is something that he said will help me out.

Steve Dresser: Yeah, Paige. A lot of people don’t realize often the answer is right under your feet. You’re already standing on it. Sometimes … I don’t do this all the time, but it’s kind of cool to just use the ground as your friend. In this case, we’re standing on what would be classified as an uphill, side hill lie or a side hill lie (with the) ball above your feet. If you are one of those players who tends to get a little steep or vertical, particularly on the down swing, you just … you don’t even have to hit a ball here, but you just get on a lie where the ball would be above your feet. Needless to say, if you got way up here and then way out over there, you’re going to slam right into the ground. So, it helps to shallow out your approach into the ball, which is generally what most people need or a lot of people need a little bit of help with.

Steve Dresser: Then I really like going that way, the uphill lie, particularly for people who need help with their driver because one thing we see a lot of-

Paige Spiranac: They grind it.

Steve Dresser: Yeah, and you can see a lot of people set up with kind of a high right (front) arm. With a driver, you want to be a little more back over here like this. So, you can see how that just naturally sets you up into that position. Kind of makes you feel like you want to catch the ball on the way up.

Paige Spiranac: On the upswing.

Steve Dresser: Which is a huge help for people and they can learn the driver with the ball slightly ascending. It increases launch, decreases spin, which is what we all want with our driver.

Paige Spiranac: And I think it’s really cool too that you’re just using something that we can find at any golf course. I know sometimes people don’t have the means or the accessibility to maybe buy a new training aide, and anyone can do this and it’ll help everyone, which I think is really cool. So, it’s a great tip. Thank you.

Steve Dresser: Oh, you’re welcome. Thank you. That’s exactly right. I’m notoriously frugal. So, if there’s something already there on the ground we can use, we’re gonna use that.

Paige Spiranac: I love it. Can’t beat that. Thank you again!

Steve Dresser: You bet!
